5 Tips for Getting Kids to Eat Healthy Foods

Hello, my dears! It’s Alla Sem here. As a mother and someone who struggled with weight for years, I know how important it is to teach children healthy habits early. Kids don’t come pre-programmed to love broccoli and spinach. They learn food preferences from us. The good news is that parents can help their kids eat better and make it fun at the same time!

Here are five tips to increase your child’s interest in healthy foods, based on what worked for me and many other parents I’ve spoken with.

1. Bring Your Kids Grocery Shopping

While in the produce section, let your kids pick out a new fruit or vegetable to try. Kids are much more interested in trying new foods when they get to choose them. Give them ownership over the decision. “You picked out this mango, let’s see what it tastes like!” This simple shift makes trying new foods an adventure rather than a chore.

2. Prepare Meals Together

Let your child be part of the meal preparation. Whether they mix something in a bowl, wash vegetables, or pour a sauce, they will be happier to eat and try new foods when they played a part in making them. Even young children can help tear lettuce or add pre-measured ingredients to a bowl. The pride of “I made this” works wonders.

3. Incorporate “Fun Foods”

Kids are drawn to foods that have different shapes and bright colors. There are many fruits that naturally fall into this category, such as kiwi or star fruit. You can also be creative with presentation. Instead of handing your child a whole orange, break it up into pieces and arrange them as a smiley face on the plate. Cut sandwiches into fun shapes with cookie cutters. You would be amazed what simple creativity can do to get kids excited about food!

4. Make Desserts Healthy

You can still have dessert and make it healthy too. Instead of depending on store-bought cookies and candy (which provide minimal nutrients), try dipping fresh strawberries in chocolate sauce, making a fruit smoothie together, or baking a berry cobbler. These choices may have some sugar but are also adding nutrients at the same time. Remember, everything is healthy in moderation.

5. When Your Child Wants Candy

Candy is a once-in-a-while treat, not an everyday food. When your child asks for candy, try offering one ounce of trail mix with a few M&M’s instead of a whole candy bar. This satisfies the sweet craving while also providing some nutrition from the nuts and dried fruit.

The Most Important Tip: Be a Role Model

Children learn more from what we do than what we say. If you enjoy physical activity and eat healthy foods, your children will likely do the same. They watch everything we do. When they see you choosing an apple over chips, or going for a walk instead of sitting on the couch, they internalize those choices as normal.

Encouraging physical activity and healthy food choices during childhood will help build these habits for a lifetime. On my journey from 110 kg to 80 kg, I realized that the habits I was teaching my children were just as important as the habits I was learning myself.
