You will find large claims about these programs, but no scientific proofs support the claims. It’s stated that detox diets clear out all harmful toxins in the body that could cause illness. The theory is that toxins have gathered in our bodies as a consequence of inhaling polluted air, consuming polluted water, and eating polluted foods. People who embark on detox diets are encouraged to follow a specific schedule. For around half the week, they must stay away from all kinds of nutrition. They are only allowed to drink water. This is designed to “cleanse” the dangerous toxic agents from the body. This withdrawal from food, combined with purgatives, is thought to rid the body of most of the harmful toxins present.

Once the person is on the diet program, only certain foods are incorporated that won’t increase the toxic load of the body. Not only that, they are also claimed to be cleansing. These are fruits, vegetables, and lots of water, of course.

The Laxative Problem

People going through detox diets are often given laxatives for fast action. Laxatives can lead to:

  • Loss of body water
  • Electrolyte imbalance (changes in mineral levels in the blood)
  • Acid-base imbalance

This can be dangerous and is not a healthy way to lose weight.

It is an erroneous concept that must be fixed. Because fasting is a valuable part of detox diets, there is always an apparent weight reduction. But this is not “real” in the sense that no body fat is lost. It is really loss of water and muscle mass, which is not desirable at all.
