Hello, my dears! It’s Alla Sem here. When I was 110 kg, I thought exercise was my ticket to eating whatever I wanted. I worked out hard, so surely I could reward myself with anything, right? Wrong. It took me years and a journey to 80 kg to understand that even active people make diet mistakes that sabotage their goals.
The people who are active pay good attention to their diet and physical appearance. But there may be some crucial and not very apparent things they are missing in their diet, like the proper intake of some essential nutrients. These gaps can collapse their diet plan and leave them not very healthy.
The American Council on Exercise has laid down some common mistakes that active people miss. Let me share them with you, along with what I learned on my own journey.
1. Skipping Breakfast
Morning meal is important for the energy of the whole day. If you skip breakfast, you eat later in the day to fill up the gap, and in this way you consume more calories overall. The need is to have a light and nutritious breakfast instead of a heavy one. This will set you up for success all day long. I used to skip breakfast and wonder why I was starving by lunch. Now I never skip it.
2. Not Eating Before a Workout
Having a proportioned meal before the workout is necessary so that it does not give you cramps or make you feel nauseous during exercise. Certain amounts of proteins, minerals, and carbohydrates should be in your system before you work out. A small banana or a piece of toast with peanut butter about an hour before exercise worked well for me.
3. Waiting Too Long After Exercise to Eat
What you eat after the workout is as important as what you eat before it. Eating protein and carbohydrates within two hours of exercise restores the energy needed to repair muscles and tendons. I learned to pack a small post-workout snack so I wasn’t left starving and making poor choices.
4. Replacing Meals with Energy Bars or Replacement Drinks
There is no substitute for natural food. Energy bars and replacement drinks can be used for instant restoration after a workout, but it must not become a habit to eat only these products. Rely on natural fruits and vegetables and have real meals. Your body needs the complexity of whole foods that bars simply can’t provide.

5. Eating Too Much Protein and Not Enough Carbs
The human body needs balance. You cannot expect to be healthy by taking in too much of only one or two nutrients. A proportion of all nutrients is essential. Eat balanced amounts of proteins and have carbohydrates as well. Carbs are not the enemy. They fuel your workouts and your brain.
6. Trusting Dietary Supplements Labels and Claims
The labels shown on product wrappings are more marketing claims than real facts. Don’t blindly trust whatever is written on the label. Instead, do some research of your own before eating anything. I wasted so much money on supplements that promised miracles and delivered nothing.
7. Consuming Too Many or Too Few Calories for Your Activity
Eating is necessary to fuel your body for the energy required by an active life. But the fear of gaining weight might deprive you of the essential amount of calories your body needs. Keep a check on your calorie intake. It must not be too much nor too low for a balanced body fit for an active lifestyle. When I started exercising more, I actually had to eat more to support my activity level.
8. Believing That You Can Eat Whatever You Want if You Exercise
It is not good thinking to eat whatever you want just because you exercise. A little too much eating can again give you excess calories. Many people realize that they need to keep a check on their eating even after exercise. Exercise is not a free pass. I learned this lesson the hard way.
9. Not Drinking the Right Amount of Fluids
You have to drink a lot of water to save yourself from dehydration, especially if you exercise in a hot environment. Water supports every function in your body, including metabolism and muscle recovery. I started carrying a water bottle everywhere, and it made a huge difference.
10. Jumping on the Latest Diet Craze to Get an “Edge”
There is no magic formula or quick method to help you lose weight and keep it off. For that, you will have to follow a proper, sustainable diet plan. Fads come and go, but healthy habits last forever. I tried every craze, and none of them worked until I committed to real, lasting changes.
The Bottom Line
Being active is wonderful, but it doesn’t make you immune to diet mistakes. On my journey from 110 kg to 80 kg, I made every single one of these errors at some point. The key is recognizing them and making small corrections. You don’t have to be perfect. Just be aware and keep improving.
With love and belief in you,
Alla Sem
