Hello, my dears! It’s Alla Sem here. After my own journey from 110 kg to 80 kg, I’ve learned that one of the biggest obstacles to weight loss isn’t just food or exercise—it’s misinformation. Accepting weight loss myths as true (the ones we always find around us, emerging either on web or in celebrity magazines) causes more problems than results. Let’s bust the 10 most popular weight loss myths together!
- 1. “Cutting calories will help me lose more weight.”
- 2. “A strict or harsh diet will work better for me to lose weight.”
- 3. “I will put on more weight by eating late at night.”
- 4. “Fat is awful.”
- 5. “Eating between meals will make me put on more weight.”
- 6. “If I skip my meal, it will help me drop off some weight.”
- 7. “Dairy products are a curse for my weight.”
- 8. “Drinking more water will help me lose weight.”
- 9. “I should not eat my favorite high-calorie foods.”
- 10. “Willpower is the most important thing for weight loss.”
1. “Cutting calories will help me lose more weight.”
Whenever you stop taking enough calories, you actually force your body into “starvation mode.” In this state, your body “feels” that you are starving and wants to sustain your weight. Your body lowers its metabolism, and as a result, you do not lose any weight. This is exactly what happened to me when I tried surviving on 800 calories a day—I felt terrible and the scale wouldn’t budge!
2. “A strict or harsh diet will work better for me to lose weight.”
Strict or harsh diets are not advisable. These diets often eliminate entire food groups or restrict you to just one kind of food. Soon you’ll prove to yourself that it’s useless and not efficient. Moreover, you’ll feel drained and tired. At the end, you’ll give up such a clumsy and dire diet. Trust me, I’ve been there, and it never ends well.
3. “I will put on more weight by eating late at night.”
It actually does not matter when you are eating food. Only the calories you take in and burn cause you to put on or lose weight. Whenever you eat food—whether it’s day, noon, or midnight—your body changes extra calories to fat after some time. In fact, if light snacks are taken before bed, you can sleep better. So it’s advisable to eat some light snacks like crackers and cheese before bed if you’re hungry!
4. “Fat is awful.”
It is required for everyone to add some fat to their food because that makes food more tasty, delicious, and pleasing. There also are some fats that are good for you, such as omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats are found greatly in fish and shellfish. Remember: healthy fats are your friends, not your enemies!
5. “Eating between meals will make me put on more weight.”
If you eat healthy snacks between meals, it will help your blood pressure and sugar levels stay constant and will help your metabolism work powerfully. It will also take off your hunger so you may not overeat at your upcoming mealtime. This was a game-changer for me on Semaglutide—small, balanced snacks kept my energy stable all day.

6. “If I skip my meal, it will help me drop off some weight.”
Actually, skipping your regular meal will not help you lose weight—it may even cause weight gain! Your metabolism slows down, and after many hours of starving, you get excessively hungry (you may also feel drowsiness and dizziness). Because of starvation, you won’t meet your regular calorie needs, which will have negative effects. By eating the food we most often skip—breakfast—we can actually lose weight more effectively.
7. “Dairy products are a curse for my weight.”
You should add low-fat dairy products to your diet. Dairy products contain calcium, which is essential for women and older people. Recent research shows that a diet containing calcium supports our weight loss efforts. So don’t be afraid of yogurt and cottage cheese!
8. “Drinking more water will help me lose weight.”
Of course, water is an essential component and key to a healthy lifestyle. But thinking that drinking water directly causes weight loss is wrong. Losing weight by drinking water usually happens when you substitute water for high-calorie drinks like sodas and sugary fruit juices. Water helps, but it’s not magic—it’s what you replace that matters!
9. “I should not eat my favorite high-calorie foods.”
If you treat yourself with your favorite food now and then, you won’t feel drained or frustrated. You’ll feel refreshed—but coming back on track after the treat is most important! Control over cravings is the key to losing weight successfully. I still enjoy my favorite foods occasionally, and you can too.
10. “Willpower is the most important thing for weight loss.”
It must be mentioned here that willpower is not the only important factor affecting weight loss. Many other factors—such as culture, activity level, health issues, genetics, and home environment—affect our weight in one way or another. Be kind to yourself and understand that weight loss is a journey with many influences, not just a test of will.
With love and belief in you,
Alla Sem
